Epimedium Extract is a common name of the plant Epimedium, which is native to Asia and the Mediterranean region. In the traditional Chinese medicinal system, and elsewhere, some species from the genus Epimedium have an age-old history in the management of ailments. Among these Epimedium grandiflorum, Epimedium and others have been used to treat illnesses such as erectile dysfunction, joint pain, and fatigue. Furthermore, it has been credited with improved cardiovascular and cerebrovascular functions, antitumor and antiaging effects as well as immunomodulatory functions. Colloquially, plants from this genus, more specifically Epimedium grandiflorum, have been referred to as "yin yang huo." The colloquial names are attributed to the legendary discovery of its aphrodisiac properties by a Chinese goat herder who noted an increased sexual activity in his herd after they consumed the plant's leaves. Clearly, most of the interest in this genus can be attributed to its aphrodisiac properties; however, existing literature illustrates that this genus has much more to offer.
Chemical constitution of Epimedium Extract
Epimedium contains a number of flavonoids. 37 compounds were characterized from the underground and aerial parts of the plant. Among them, 28 compounds were prenylflavonoids. The predominant flavonoid, epimedin C, ranged from 1.4 to 5.1% in aerial parts and 1.0 to 2.8% in underground parts. Icariin is flavanol glycoside that has an inhibitory effect on human PDE-5.
Health Benefits of Epimedium Extract Icariin
Epimedium Extract refers to various herb species of the Epimedium genus, and may be known as "yin yang huo." It has limited evidence of health benefits. Epimedium Extract contains chemicals that might help increase blood flow and improve sexual function. It also contains phytoestrogens, chemicals that act somewhat like the hormone estrogen.
